At FWS, we understand the significance of efficient material handling in our industrial construction operations. It’s essential to utilize proper techniques and equipment to ensure smooth processes and minimize risks to our workforce.

Mechanical Material Handling

When moving materials, we prioritize using mechanical methods whenever possible. Tools such as skid steers or forklifts expedite the process and significantly reduce the risk of strains and musculoskeletal injuries to our valuable workforce. Attempting to move heavy items manually puts undue strain on individuals and increases the likelihood of incidents.

We always emphasize checking the rated capacities of such equipment to avoid overloading, which can compromise safety and lead to equipment damage or failure. Considering factors, such as the weight, size and shape of the materials being moved, ensures proper handling and prevents potential mishaps.

Safe Telehandler Operation

When utilizing telehandlers, adhering to specific guidelines is essential. These include:

  • Centering the load on the forks as close to the mast as possible
  • Securing the load back to the telehandler carriage
  • Avoiding overloading as it impairs control and can cause tipping
  • Lowering the forks when travelling! Adjust the load to the lowest position.
  • Piling and cross-tiering stacked loads correctly when possible

Manual Material Handling

In situations where mechanical methods are not feasible, workers should adhere to the following tips:

  • Wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including eye protection, safety footwear, long-sleeve shirts and gloves
  • Utilizing the buddy system when dealing with bulky or awkward loads to distribute the weight evenly and reduce strain

In addition to using proper techniques, we encourage using wheeled dollies or carts to facilitate material movement safely and efficiently. Ensuring clear pathways free of debris and obstacles allows for smooth maneuvering of carts, further minimizing the risk of accidents.

Addressing Musculoskeletal Injury Risks

Musculoskeletal injuries are a prevalent concern in the workplace, accounting for 40 per cent of all lost time injuries worldwide. By prioritizing safety measures and implementing proper handling techniques, we can mitigate these risks and create a safer working environment for our employees.
