Coke/Alumina Concrete Storage Tanks

Kitimat, British Columbia
overview

Project Overview

FWS Group was engaged in the construction of specialized concrete storage tanks for coke and alumina at a high-capacity facility. This project was designed to provide robust infrastructure for the efficient storage and handling of these critical industrial materials, ensuring their safe and reliable management throughout the storage and retrieval processes.

goals

Project Goals

The primary goal of the Coke/Alumina Concrete Storage Tanks project was to enhance the storage and retrieval efficiency for both fresh alumina and calcined coke. The project aimed to create a highly durable and reliable storage system, with an emphasis on minimizing contamination risks and optimizing material flow.

Tools

Technologies and Innovations

Key technologies and features integrated into the project include:

  • Slipform Concrete Silos: Two large slipform concrete silos, one for storing 20,000 tonnes of fresh alumina and another for 10,000 tonnes of calcined coke, were constructed. These silos provide a strong, secure, and durable environment for storing materials.
  • Concrete Reclaim Tunnels: These tunnels were designed to streamline the material retrieval process, allowing for efficient and controlled access to stored materials.
  • Sloped Bin Bottoms: The silos feature sloped bottoms to ensure smooth material flow towards the reclaim tunnels, minimizing clumping and ensuring efficient discharge of both alumina and coke.
