Fraser Grain Terminal (FGT), owned through a joint venture between Parrish & Heimbecker, Limited and GrainsConnect Canada Operations Inc., engaged FWS Group to design and build a cutting-edge grain terminal located on the north shore of the Fraser River in Surrey, BC. Completed in December 2020, the project was developed to address challenges in western Canada’s grain transport infrastructure, including limited rail capacity and inadequate port facilities. By improving logistics and increasing shipping capacity, the terminal enhances grain export operations, benefits Canadian farmers, and strengthens global trade partnerships.
The facility features an extensive storage system with 73,000 metric tonnes in above-ground steel bins and an additional 20,000 metric tonnes in flat storage. Its innovative rail system, with a semi-loop track accommodating over 300 railcars, ensures uninterrupted inbound and outbound grain flow. Supporting up to 80 bulk vessels annually, including Panamax, Supramax, and Handymax ships, the terminal integrates advanced infrastructure such as a three-tower retractable ship loader for efficient and environmentally sustainable operations.
The Fraser Grain Terminal project was driven by key objectives:
The facility integrates industry-leading solutions to optimize performance and sustainability:
The completed terminal successfully revolutionized Canada’s grain export infrastructure. It now supports up to 80 vessels annually, enabling continuous operations through its rail system and state-of-the-art storage facilities. The three-tower ship loader and dust suppression systems ensure efficient and environmentally responsible operations, while the realigned rail network enhances connectivity with major transport providers. As a result, the terminal significantly increases Canada’s grain export capacity, providing long-term benefits for farmers and global customers alike.
FWS Group’s delivery of the Fraser Grain Terminal has set a new standard for efficiency and sustainability in Canada’s grain export sector, improving logistics and strengthening connections to global markets.
