Fostering the Next Generation of Engineers: FWS and University Partnerships

FWS is committed to cultivating the future of engineering. We achieve this through partnerships with various student groups within the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Engineering. These partnerships go beyond financial support – they’re about fostering a strong engineering community and empowering students to achieve their full potential. Students gain valuable skills and experiences through these programs that will prepare them for successful careers.

UMSAE

One such group we collaborate with is the University of Manitoba SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers). This student-run organization boasts several design teams, like Aero Design, Baja, Formula Electric and Formula, that design and race vehicles against other universities.

While our primary support takes the form of financial contributions, we also actively participate in their design review processes. We dedicate employee time and expertise to mentor students. We assist them in developing the confidence to present their design to judges, effectively discuss feedback and objectively evaluate diverse design approaches. These skills are crucial for success in the professional world, where engineers regularly defend and refine their ideas.

Steel Bridge Design Team

Another program we’re proud to sponsor is the Steel Bridge Design Team. Here, students take on the challenging task of designing and constructing a bridge. Their creation is judged not just on strength but also on its weight and cost-effectiveness. This program goes beyond textbook knowledge, pushing students to consider the practicalities of construction and the importance of resource optimization. It’s a valuable lesson that translates directly into the real world, where engineers must constantly strive for efficient, cost-effective solutions.

ConCrete Canoe

We are also proud to sponsor the University of Manitoba’s ConCrete Canoe Team. Traditionally used for its strength and weight-bearing capabilities, concrete presents a distinct challenge in buoyancy. This program pushes students to think critically and creatively, applying their engineering knowledge to overcome unconventional obstacles. This sponsorship epitomizes FWS’ commitment to supporting students in pursuing innovative and impactful engineering solutions.

We believe in empowering engineering students throughout their academic journey, preparing them for future careers. These programs provide practical experiences that showcase the skills we value most in potential hires. In fact, many team members seamlessly transition into summer student positions at FWS and several FWS employees themselves boast participation in SAE programs during their studies.

If you’re involved in an engineering project or initiative that aligns with our values of innovation, efficiency and practical application, we’d love to hear from you!
