Aerial Work Platforms (AWPs) are indispensable tools designed to elevate personnel, along with their tools and materials, to carry out work at height. However, AWPs can pose significant risks if not operated with caution. The primary causes of injuries, incidents and fatalities associated with these platforms include falls, electrocutions and tip-overs. AWPs generally have the potential to become unstable, particularly when not operated on a firm, flat and level surface.

AWP Safety Tips

These risks underscore the importance of adhering to strict safety protocols and guidelines. To mitigate these risks:

  • Ensure proper training: Before operating any AWP, ensure you have received adequate training.
  • Read manufacturer’s manuals: Familiarize yourself with the manufacturer’s manuals to understand the operational guidelines and safety instructions thoroughly.
  • Wear fall restraint equipment: All individuals working on an AWP must wear appropriate fall protection equipment to prevent falls.
  • Complete pre-start inspection: Conduct a thorough pre-start inspection of the AWP and document it before commencing any work.
  • Know the rating chart: Familiarize yourself with the AWP’s rating chart and ensure it is posted for reference.
  • Check for hazards: Survey the work area for potential hazards before extending the AWP.
  • Comply with the owner’s manual: Ensure that all personnel on the aerial platform adhere to the provisions outlined in the owner’s manual.
  • Secure outriggers: Ensure that outriggers are fully extended and properly positioned to support the load.
  • Inspect platform guardrails: Verify that platform guardrails are correctly installed and gates or openings are closed to prevent falls.

Above all, it’s crucial to emphasize the significance of competence and knowledge in AWP operations. Individuals should refrain from operating AWPs without proper training or if they feel uncomfortable doing so. Prioritizing safety ensures not only personal well-being but also the safety of fellow workers on-site.
